Notes: 1. All documents in original to be submitted  for consular services together with photocopies

(1)    Registration of child

 (For issue of a passport for the first time to a child born in the U.K. please see under the relevant section in passport services page).

 (2)    Consent letter (for issue of a passport to a child in India when one of the parents is in the U.K. or of a single parent)

If one of the parents is in the UK and the other parent in India applies to the Passport Officer there, he/she can submit to the Passport Officer a Consent Letter/No Objection Letter from the parent in the UK. Click here to download the prescribed form which can be issued by the Consulate on payment of a prescribed fee.

(3)    Legalisation/attestation of documents/ Powers of Attorney/Will etc.

The general principle is that any document signed/issued by a person abroad which has to be used/produced before the authorities in India has to be attested/legalised before the Indian Mission/Post concerned.

(a)    If you are an Indian national with valid Indian passport -

The requirements:

Note 1: The document(s) must be signed in the presence of the Consulate officials
Note 2 : In case of Power of Attorney/Will, two photographs of the executant(s) are also required
Note 3: Affidavits/declarations can also be sworn/made before a Consular Officer on payment of the required fees.
Note 4: In case the signatory is not able to appear personally before a Consular Officer for compelling reasons, the following procedure may be followed:

If you are a British national/foreigner of Indian origin holding valid British passport/valid foreign passport, the requirements are:

  • Applications form for miscellaneous services

  • The documents to be attested in original by the Notary Public (together with a photocopy of each)

  • In case of Power of Attorney/Will, two photographs of the executants are also required.

  • In case the signatory is not able to appear personally before a Consular Officer for compelling reasons, the following procedures may be followed:

The signatory is required to get their documents (and photograph(s) in cases of Power of Attorney) attested by a British Notary Public and then by the Legalisation Section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) (telephone number 020 7008 1111).  These can then be mailed to the Consulate along with the fee and a stamped self-addressed special delivery envelope or can be submitted at the Counter of the Consulate for attestation.  Any document signed in the presence of a Notary Public by a person who is not able to appear personally at the Consulate must be attested by the Legalisation Section of the FCO.

b)    India is one of the signatories to The Hague Apostille Convention and the new scheme was implemented in India on 29.8.2007.  The purpose of the Convention was to reduce the two stage authentication of public documents to one single stage.  If a public document is apostilled by the country of origin, it does not require re-authentication by authorities of the country in whose territory it has to be produced.

c)    Birth, Death, Marriage and Educational Certificates etc. issued by the Indian authorities in India can also be attested by the Consulate General of India on payment of required fees provided the same have been authenticated by the Consular Section of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Patiala House, New Delhi-110001.

(4)    Sponsorship letters 

Note: The sponsorship form/letter has to be signed by the sponsor in the presence of a Consular officer with the following documents:

  • salary slip or other proof of income

  • valid passport of the sponsor (with a photocopy) and valid visa (in case of Indian nationals)

  • proof of ownership of property or accommodation

  • bank statement showing a minimal balance of £2000 or more

  • Fees

The requirements: 

Note: the applicant is required to come to the Consulate in person.  In case the applicant is unable to appear before a Consular Officer due to compelling reasons, he/she may obtain the life certificate from his/her GP’s official stationary and with his/her stamp.  This life certificate (original) may then be sent to the CGI for their consular attestation along with the above requirements.

(7)     Certificate in connection with taking of dead body to India

  • Application form for miscellaneous services (to be filled in by the person accompanying the dead body)

  • Death certificate from the relevant local authority

  • Coroner's Out of England order

  • Doctor's Free from Infection certificate

  • Embalming certificate

  • Certificate from the undertaker confirming that the packing of body is in accordance with international regulations

  • Valid passport of the applicants accompanying the dead body 

  • Gratis service (no fee to be charged)

Note: If the deceased person held an Indian passport, the same may be brought to the Consulate for cancellation.

(8)    Ashes/human remains certificates 

  • Application form for miscellaneous services (to be filled in by the person accompanying the dead body)

  • Death certificate from the relevant Local Authority

  • Cremation certificate

  • Certificate from the undertaker confirming that the urn contains ashes of the deceased person

  • Valid passport of applicant taking the ashes

  • Gratis service (no fee to be charged)

SURRENDER OF INDIAN PASSPORTS

Persons of Indian origin who have acquired Foreign citizenship are required to surrender their Indian Passports to the nearest Indian Mission/Post immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship. Indian citizenship Act does not allow dual citizenship. Holding Indian passport/acquiring Indian passport / travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Passport Act and attracts penalties. 

In view of the legal provision all foreign nationals of Indian origin applying for Indian visa, OCI/PIO card or other consular services are required to surrender their valid Indian passports to this Consulate or to the High Commission of India in London.  They would be issued surrender certificate in lieu of depositing their Indian passports.

 A fee of £90 for renouncing Indian citizenship / surrender of Indian passport is chargeable. The surrender certificate will be issued in 7 working days. Penalty cases would take more time.

Imposition of penalty clause under Section 12(1A) of the Passports Act  1967 for not surrendering Indian passport/travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship should be included as per the details given below. The service to be treated as miscellaneous service under the Passports Act and miscellaneous fee, as prescribed may be charged. Grace period of three months is allowed from the date of acquisition of foreign  citizenship for the purpose of travel on Indian passport. No penalty will be leviable for travel  on Indian passport.
