The signatory is required to get their documents (and photograph(s) in cases of Power of Attorney) attested by a British Notary Public and then by the Legalisation Section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) (telephone number 020 7008 1111). These can then be mailed to the Consulate along with the fee and a stamped self-addressed special delivery envelope or can be submitted at the Counter of the Consulate for attestation. Any document signed in the presence of a Notary Public by a person who is not able to appear personally at the Consulate must be attested by the Legalisation Section of the FCO.
b) India is one of the signatories to The Hague Apostille Convention and the new scheme was implemented in India on 29.8.2007. The purpose of the Convention was to reduce the two stage authentication of public documents to one single stage. If a public document is apostilled by the country of origin, it does not require re-authentication by authorities of the country in whose territory it has to be produced.
c) Birth, Death, Marriage and Educational Certificates etc. issued by the Indian authorities in India can also be attested by the Consulate General of India on payment of required fees provided the same have been authenticated by the Consular Section of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Patiala House, New Delhi-110001.
